Getting a DSM is becoming a bit hard, especially an AWD one, but when you do find one, the price tag is realistic, and the result is immense fun that is relatively affordable. The stock DSM comes with the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that delivers 210 horsepower. Examples have reached 1,000 horsepower, and have gone extremely quick in the quarter-mile. These cars have the right aftermarket support, and a lot of their parts can be used from Evos and Eclipses. In other words, the DSM is the EVO before it was a thing. This is the same engine in the very successful Lancer Evolution. The DSM comes in all-wheel drive configuration and a little surprise under its hood: the 4G63 engine. Ohio has a huge DSM scene in their yearly "The Shootout" drag race event, and there you will know why these cars are such a successful tuner vehicles. The Eagle Talon, which is quite similar to the Mitsubishi Eclipse at the time, and even the Plymouth Laser, is a tuner car's dream. Whether you get a clean one or a beat up one that you plan on cleaning, this car should be anywhere between $6k and $12k.ĭSM is the result of a collaboration between Chrysler and Mitsubishi in the early '90s, also known as Diamond Star Motors. It's lightweight, and with some suspension upgrade, brakes, and wheels and tires, it can be a great front-wheel drive that you can enjoy on track. The Civic itself can be a tremendously fun vehicle. The second-best part about it is how interchangeable its parts are with other platforms, where you can just replace the head instead of the need to machine your current head. When equipped with variable valve timing and lift electronic control technology (VTEC), this engine can scream. The B-Series comes in different displacements, all of which have great aftermarket potential. One of which is Honda's B-Series, which the 1999 to 2000 Civic sported. The Honda Civic doesn't sound much like a sports car, but it historically featured some of the best tuner engines out there. If you want a great example, expect to pay around $10,000 however, cheaper options are easily available. Aftermarket support does not lack for any Miata you decide to buy, with coilovers, exhausts, intakes, manifolds, and event turbocharger kits if you decide to build your engine's internals. The NC is a bit heavier, however, and it can sacrifice some of the best things about a Miata. If you want something even cheaper, the NC Miata is your best option. Thanks to its light weight, this car is a blast to drive on the track, without any major problems in terms of losing traction. This continued building upon the Miata's reputation of being a momentum car. While it lacks power, the NB shined in the weight department, with around 2,300-pound curb weight. Halfway through this generation, in 2001, Mazda gave the NB 15 more horsepower thanks to the variable valve timing technology. This generation became a little rounder than the NA, and it sported a 1.8-liter naturally-aspirated engine. Fortunately, there are quite a few other generations that are still relatively affordable, while offering the same level of tuning potential. Unfortunately, enthusiasts are recognizing its cool-factor and its value is getting higher and higher. In the end, it's the classic and the original. We all would love an NA Miata (if we can fit in it), which is the first generation that started in 1989.
